In 1887 the first student graduated from a full medical course at the University of Otago. There followed a growing excellence in medical education and research, founding a reputation for innovation and quality in the University of Otago Faculty of Medicine that is recognised all over the world.
The Dunedin School of Medicine carries the proud history of the first established Medical School in the country. We hope that you will see in the information on this website that the traditional commitment to excellence remains.
The School’s staff are active in undergraduate teaching from years 2 to 6 of the medical curriculum, teach in a variety of postgraduate courses in specialised postgraduate areas of public health, general practice, sports medicine, child health, and obstetrics & gynaecology, contribute to registrar teaching in the postgraduate specialties, and supervise a growing number of research students for PhDs and Masters degrees.
There is a smorgasbord of ground-breaking medical research in all departments, with some groups such as the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Research Unit, the Injury Prevention Research Unit, the Cancer Pathology group, the Edgar National Diabetes Research Centre, and the Renal Research group, acknowledged as international leaders in their fields.
