Dunedin School of Medicine

Teaching

There are approximately 180 clinical undergraduate medical students; 60 in fourth year, 60 in fifth year and 60 in sixth year. The students rotate through all facets of medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychological medicine, rural medicine and general practice. In the final year (sixth year) they have a three month elective period which gives them the opportunity to pursue an area of particular interest in the medical field, be it research or clinical and this can be done within New Zealand or overseas.

Medicine deals mainly with fourth year and sixth year students. The only fifth year contact is with the rheumatology team whilst doing their orthopaedic surgery attachment.

There is a postgraduate training programme for senior house surgeons and medical registrars with an annual two week course in internal medicine in November to prepare them for the written FRACP part I examination. The two week course is attended by about 115 registrants from all over Australasia.
