The Medical Education Group

Students can escape bad teaching: but they can't escape bad assessment.

The Medical Education Group was formed to support educational activities in the Dunedin School of Medicine, providing the leadership and liaison that facilitates curriculum initiatives.

Liaison and advice are provided by the Faculty Curriculum Committee.

The MEG, along with good liaison between staff and student committees, other schools in the Division, Southern District Health Board, Higher Education Development Centre, and other organisations as appropriate, manages the 4–6 year MB ChB programme development, evaluation and assessment, devolving implementation to departments as appropriate.

The Medical Education Group website has information and news on medical education at Otago.

Rural Medical Immersion Programme (RMIP)

RMIP is a programme for fifth-year medical students from the University of Otago.

Our students spend the year living in a smaller community and learn in parallel with the traditional programme by self-directed and case based learning.

The student works with a hospital-based doctor or GP in an apprenticeship model, seeing patients then studying afterwards what they have seen. They experience a large variety of patients with illnesses or injuries that they have then studied.

Our teaching centres are in Dannevirke, Masterton, Blenheim, Greymouth, Queenstown, and Balclutha. Students live there, attach to local practices and local hospitals, and travel to more remote localities.

The outcomes are excellent and that is supported by two in-depth reviews.
