Study Details

This study was a randomized, controlled trial (RCT), the MOA Trial, designed to investigate the benefits and costs of physiotherapy for improving pain and physical function in people with OA of the hip or knee. Patients were randomly allocated to one of four groups: exercise physiotherapy; manual physiotherapy; exercise plus manual physiotherapy; usual medical care only.

The study included an economic evaluation conducted alongside the MOA Trial. The findings of the trial are therefore presented not only in terms of health outcomes, but also in terms of economic savings to the healthcare system, society, taxpayers and individual.

Funding

This research was funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand, and the Lottery Health grants board.
