Teaching

Undergraduate

The section provides clinical musculoskeletal education to medical undergraduate students of the University of Otago at a pre-clinical and clinical level. Pre-clinical musculoskeletal teaching is based on a series of integrated clinical demonstrations in Year 2 as part of the musculoskeletal module.

Clinical teaching is based in Year 5 and is part of the Musculoskeletal and Emergency Management module which runs for 7 weeks.

In addition there are four integrated musculoskeletal days per year. The teaching is clinically orientated, case/problem based with emphasis on small group learning.

Year 6 (Trainee Intern) has six weekly orthopaedic runs throughout the year and there is normally one student attached to each of the three consultant teams. The teaching is purely clinical and self directed although there are regular teaching sessions during the year.

Postgraduate

The Musculoskeletal Clinical Practice Group (Southern District Health Board) in association with the University of Otago runs a postgraduate programme for basic and advanced orthopaedic trainees. Click this link for further information on the Postgraduate Diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine.

A comprehensive education programme is provided to all orthopaedic trainees under the auspices of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association and Royal Australian College of Surgeons.
