University of Otago Dunedin School of Medicine New Zealand Paediatric Surveillance Unit

Welcome

Updated January 2012

Welcome to the New Zealand Paediatric Surveillance Unit (NZPSU) web page.

The NZPSU was established with funding from the Ministry of Health in order to undertake surveillance of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) for the Ministry of Health’s National Certification Committee for the Eradication of Poliomyletis (NCCEP). The opportunity was taken for the study of other uncommon high impact conditions, most of which have been undertaken by paediatricians with a particular interest.

You will find protocols and questionnaires required to notify a case, application forms for a new condition on the card, previous annual reports, published papers and contact details on this website.

Aim

  • To operate a system for monitoring acute flaccid paralysis, as part of the global certification of eradication of poliomyelitis, required by the World Health Organisation
  • To facilitate national surveillance and improve the knowledge of uncommon childhood conditions in New Zealand
