Research Opportunities
Master/PhD Projects
Study for a PhD in Child Health is normally 3 full time years of work or 5 part-time years. A thesis embodying the results of these investigations is needed and would need to be seen as a significant contribution to the area of research chosen. A Masters project (1 full time year or 2 part-time years) can be an end in itself, but can be started and then, if it goes well at the 1 year stage, be transferred to a PhD. Enquiry as to these projects is most easily via the mentioned supervisor or directly with the Head of Section.
Projects in the following areas are available:
- Genetics:
Supervisor Professor Stephen Robertson
- Sleep disorders in children:
Supervisor Prof Barry Taylor & Dr Barbara Galland
- Autonomic function of children and infants:
Supervisor Dr Barbara Galland
- Type 1 diabetes in children:
Supervisor Prof Barry Taylor
- Obesity in children (and its prevention):
Supervisor Prof Barry Taylor, Dr Rachael Taylor & Dr David Gerrard
- Use of drugs in children (paediatric therapeutics):
Supervisor Dr David Reith
Bachelor Medical Science (BMedSci) Projects
For any Medical Student who is aiming at an academic career in the future, taking a year out of the medical course to complete a BMedSci is a good idea. This generally involves one years full time work on a research area aimed at producing a thesis at the end of this time. Usually a summer studentship would be used before and after the year in order to get enough time to complete a project properly.
We are keen to talk to any student interested in doing one or more years research in the following areas:
- Genetics
(Professor Stephen Robertson)
- Sleep disorders in children
(Prof Barry Taylor & Dr Barbara Galland)
- Autonomic function of children and infants
(Dr Barbara Galland)
- Type 1 diabetes in children
(Prof Barry Taylor)
- Obesity in children (and its prevention)
(Prof Barry Taylor)
- Use of drugs in children (paediatric therapeutics)
(Dr David Reith)
Summer Studentships
Summers studentships varying in amount from $3500 to $5000 for 10 weeks work are available each summer from either the Faculty of Medicine, National Child Health Research Foundation, Health Research Council, Injury Prevention Foundation and Medical Council of New Zealand.
The department usually offers at least 3 topics of investigation for
students to take up during these studentships and they are advertised on the appropriate student noticeboards. If you wish to work on a particular child health topic or with a specific supervisor in our department, you are welcome to approach either the Head of Section, chair of the Research Committee (Professor Stephen Robertson) or Dr Barbara Galland.
