Scholarships
University of Otago Scholarships
The University of Otago offers a range of prestigious scholarships for postgraduate study. Students of outstanding ability are invited to apply for these scholarships.

Dunedin School of Medicine Scholarships
In addition to the above, the following scholarships are available within the Dunedin School of Medicine:
- Lady King Scholarship
- Open to graduates in Medicine of the University of Otago or of other Universities approved by Council. Available for 1 year in the first instance. The Scholarship may be renewed for up to two additional years, depending on satisfactory progress. A tax free emolument is available, dependent on qualifications. The Scholarship is tenable at the University of Otago Medical School in Dunedin, and is available for the purpose of encouraging the study in New Zealand of preventable work in paediatrics, and the well being of mother and child in the antenatal, intra-natal, and postnatal periods, and of the child up to school age.
- Frances G Cotter Scholarship for Research in Medicine
- Open to medical graduates who are registered as medical practitioners with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Preference given to graduates of any University in New Zealand who will have completed the requirements for full registration. The Scholarship is available for 1 year. A tax free emolument is available dependent on qualifications. The Scholarship is tenable at the University of Otago for the purpose of undertaking research in the Department of Medicine, Dunedin, or as part of a collaborative project involving another University department, with the active participation of a member of the Senior staff of the Department of Medicine in Dunedin.
- Emily Johnston Scholarship for Research in the Science and Art of Clinical Medicine
- Open to all graduates of any University in New Zealand who are Commonwealth subjects holding a degree in medicine, and who have completed not less than ten months residence as house surgeon or house physician in a hospital in New Zealand containing not less than one hundred beds. Available for 1 year in the first instance. The Scholarship may be renewed for up to two additional years, depending on satisfactory progress. A tax free emolument is available, dependent on qualifications. The Scholarship is tenable at the University of Otago in the Department of Medicine, Dunedin School of Medicine, for research to be carried out in the science and art of clinical medicine.
- Dunbar Research Scholarship
- Open to graduates of the University of Otago, is tenable at the Dunedin School of Medicine and is available to undertake research in relation to urinary, uterine or catarrhal disorders, or such other field of research as may be approved by the University. The Scholarship would be particularly suited to a graduate of the Division of Health Sciences. Available for 1 year in the first instance. The Scholarship may be renewed for up to two additional years, depending on satisfactory progress. A tax free emolument is available, dependent on qualifications.
- Dunedin School of Medicine Clinical Research Scholarship
- Open to medical graduates who are registered as medical practitioners with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Preference given to graduates of any University in New Zealand who will have completed the requirements for full registration. Available for one year in the first instance. The Scholarship may be renewed for up to two additional years, depending on satisfactory progress. A tax free emolument is available, dependent on qualifications. This funding is to support the recruitment of clinicians in training to carry out research as a preparation for a career as an academic in a clinical discipline. Tenable at the University of Otago within any department of the Dunedin School of Medicine.
